Hamburg State Ministry for Economy, Transport and Innovation

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is located in Northern Germany and Germany's second largest town. The city traditionally maintains close relations to countries and business partners all over the world. Due to the geographical and historical circumstances since the time of the Hanseatic League strong links to neighboring regions exist. These are especially the Baltic Sea States, Russia, other Northern European Countries and the Mediterranean. Overseas partnerships being of vital interest for the City of Hamburg include beyond others China and India.

The Port of Hamburg, being located between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, is commonly considered as the "Gateway to the World". It is currently the second biggest container port in Europe. The Port is an all-purpose port with excellent hinterland connections and can be easily accessed from the North Sea via the Elbe River. Modal split share of cargo moved by rail and inland waterway carriers are steadily growing in the Port of Hamburg.
The Hamburg State Ministry for Economy, Transport and Innovation is an administrative body of the Hamburg Senate which is the regional government of Hamburg. The strengthening of the economic potential, the competitiveness and the growth of the economy of Hamburg and the metropolitan region are key issues for the Hamburg government and the State Ministry. Research, regional development and international co-operation play an important role. Future oriented branches and clusters are promoted and the development of new infrastructures, networks and human capital is fostered.

The European Union Affairs Section of the Hamburg State Ministry for Economy, Transport and Innovation is responsible for economy related EU-policy issues. It focuses on European economy, ports, transport and customs issues. To strengthen the Port of Hamburg and its international standing, the Ministry participates in international projects dealing with port and policy issues. Important goals of these projects are the exchange of experiences, the development of innovative sustainable economic strategies and the presentation of Hamburg on the international level and vis-à-vis the European Union.

Hamburg Port Authority

Since 2005, the Hamburg Port Authority has been providing future-orientated port-management services offering one face to the customer.
 
As an institution under public law, the HPA is in charge of paving the way for the efficient, resource-friendly and sustainable implementation of infrastructure projects in the port.
The HPA is the contact point for all kinds of questions concerning waterside and landside infrastructure, the navigational safety of vessel traffic, port railway facilities, port property management and the economic conditions within the port area. The HPA ensures the provision of land as required, performs all sovereign duties and provides port industry services.
