City of Ancona

The City of Ancona, placed in the centre of Italy is the capital of the Marche Region. The City counts slightly more than 100.000 inhabitants.The city borders are defined by the Adriatic sea and by a hilly area tightly connected to the Monte Conero promontory.

Ancona, is not a concentric city, but it appears as a peninsula divided by numerous hills. This particular layout does not facilitate the connection between the centre and the modern part of the city and between the city, or the peripheral areas (national roads, other surroundings cities, etc.). Only the 5% of the territory is flat.

Ancona hosts, is one of the most important ports in the Adriatic region for passengers, freights and fishing. The port represents the main production activity of the whole region, with the structural presence of daily movements, in large part by heavy vehicles, through the urban area in order to carry out the production cycle.

Two main access roads, connect the urban centre and the port with the suburbs and with the main national infrastructure of connection (airport, highway, etc.).

The Adriatic National Railway runs along the North-East access road until the station. One railway section connect the station with a limited part the port. It is mostly utilized by local trains that transport passengers coming from Northern Italy.
