Activities

Following the project’s objective, a number of activities are planned in different focus areas:

• ICT in Maritime Transport and Port Interfaces
• Innovative hinterland & logistics concepts

These issues will be addressed in various workshops, conferences and two best practice guides. As a result, publication of best practice guides and the knowledge transfer through measurement of capacity building among partners will be conducted.

Generally a 3-staged methodological approach has been established in the project Port Integration by IDENTIFICATION, EXCHANGE & TRANSFER of best practices between project partners on practical und policy level.

Maritime and Port Interfaces:
Ports are key points of modal transfer and are of vital interest to handle 90% of Europe’s international trade and 40% of intra-Community trade. The integration of maritime and hinterland transport chains through ports requires also a smoothening of the corresponding information flows via electronic platforms.

In the past years, there were a number concepts and technologies of this electronic platform developed to enhance the efficiency of maritime and port interfaces. The EuropeanCommission has communicated its European Ports Policy which has influence on the advancement of modernization measures of the European Ports in the future. The measures include the adoption of the new Directive 2010/65/EU of 20 October 2010 on reporting formalities for ships arriving in and/or departing from ports of the member state, e-maritime initiatives, and the development of Port Community Systems (PCS).

The key issues in this working group are:
• Promoting sea transport by improving the interaction of the different EDI systems in the ports,
• Creating faster and more efficient transport flows based on EDI systems that can better ‘talk’ to each other,
• To make ports more fast and attractive by better share and provision of information between the sender and receiver of the goods – so that relevant information is available at all modal stages and changes.
